From Weinheim to Notting Hill:
A floor covering sets the tone

Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant know Notting Hill very well. For several weeks at the end of the last millennium, the London district was the filming location for the romantic comedy of the same name, which warmed hearts around the world and was nominated three times for the Golden Globe Award. When the film was first conquered conquering the cinemas, the boys and girls who today attend Notting Hill Preparatory School were still far from being born. Sited just a few kilometres west of central London, the school takes children from year 5 to year 8. In 2018, increasing demand for places meant a new building to expand capacity. True to Notting Hill, the project was worthy of a film itself, as it needed to be planned and built beneath a main road next to the nearby tube line. This was a worthy challenge for the renowned firm of Hanson Architects, especially in terms of the acoustics. After all, it was necessary to ensure a peaceful learning atmosphere in spite of the busy location.

Today, among other things, the new wing houses the dining room, kitchen, music and art rooms. When it came to the question of the floor covering, the answer came from Weinheim. noraplan sentica was chosen for its ability to create a special atmosphere in any room thanks to the inspiring colours and the discreet granular structure. The corridors impress with an unusual and modern design concept that combines accent colours and muted tones. There are mixed patterns on the floor as well, where rubber inlays in grey and white become a special eye-catcher. The rubber flooring is also non-slip, which is important with children running around. At the same time, it is very robust, extremely durable and easy to clean thanks to its surface texture. This is a significant benefit when snacks and other sticky bits and pieces often end up under foot. In addition to noraplan sentica, a second product line was used: noraplan stone. This elegant and restrained flooring fits seamlessly into the design of public facilities, such as schools. Apart from its high level of walking comfort and shock-absorbing properties, this indestructible product offers impressive footfall sound insulation of 6-8 dB – despite the nearby main road and tube line.
