Care Center “De Vleugels”, Klerken, Belgium

“De Vleugels” is an expertise and support center for people with mental and / or multiple disabilities. The care center Maria ter Engelen, which was renamed since April 1st 2018 into ‘vzw De Vleugels', realized two new buildings, De Linde and De Link, as part of its Master Plan. "In a health care environment, special attention is always given to the choice of floor covering. In addition to hygiene and easy maintenance, the important criteria for our facilities are also solidity and acoustics ", say Linda Maes, financial director and Marc Devreese, director of care, of “De Vleugels” in Klerken, West Flanders.

The care center accommodates both adults and minors in need of heavy medical assistance. Minors receive not only basic care, but also educational care, like improving their social skills.

Master plan for renovation

At the beginning of the 1990s, The Board of Directors of Maria ter Engelen had chosen, among other things, for safety reasons, that they did not want to continue renovating existing buildings. The architect Antoon De Creus was therefore asked to draw up a master plan in which a completely new campus would be built, in different phases. It was decided to demolish the large main building. Only the chapel has been kept and integrated into the new Camino building. Since then, the most recent buildings were planned as a cooperation between the aforementioned architect Antoon De Creus and the architects Luc and Karel Vandewynckel from Poperinge.
